It's nice that you won with a group of mostly rangers but this doesn't really say anything regarding how good a class is. Not that I'm asking for any (objective analysis of the ranger has been done extensively) but ya know, it's not really proof...

Another person has realized that rangers do not suck, contradicting numerous shortsighted idiots that often come here and claim the class is useless.

I challenge any other group to run through the Underworld, hunting smites and coldfire nights in a group of only four...trappers rule through there...not proof of ranger superiority, just a nice area for us to play...

My first character ever was a ranger.
I quit him 'cause I thought he sucked.
When I partied with rangers...they all sucked.
Then I saw a video on some forums of a ranger.
And then I made another ranger.
And now I love my ranger.
I'm definately going to have to agree, 90% of the rangers I've ever met were useless to me. Hell I know if my first character would've continued to be a ranger I would've sucked. But I went and researched the skills, looked into some builds. Went with some pick and choose and improvision and...BAM. I love my ranger. Today, most every group I joined in the arenas (small-end I know, but our group of 1 monk 2 rangers and an elementalist took out 10 groups in the normal arena, several of them having at least 2, even 3 monks with them...and then we won about 4 battles in the team arenas. With me and the other ranger as the main damage dealers.)
In the tombs, since I'm not often the target, I can typically take down a couple of the bad guys alone while the rest of my team concentrates elsewhere. And in GvG, a few good rangers can be be a great addition to have.
A ranger played properly most definately, does not suck.
Go rangers.

I've found that 90 percent of the people that play this game have no idea what they are doing...whether it's because they are generally awful at video games...or because they've been rushed through the entire thing I don't know. But most people have absolutely no idea how to play there class. That said, Ranger is a VERY difficult class to play effectively. They don't get great armor...they don't do great damage....their skills don't allow them to do much damage...and they don't get alot of mana. BUT the ranger can change the battle field...it's the only class in the game that can do EVERYTHING effectively...The ranger is PERFECT for calling targets and leading a group. When played correctly the ranger can be VERY effective. Trap & Pull......it's your best friend.
in short...EVERY class is super effective if played correctly...some easier than others, but all of the classes in this game are pretty balanced it just takes the right frame of mind and the desire to lead to play the ranger effectively.

They dont get great armor? they get the second best armor in the game: 70AL +30AL vs elemental attacks
also with high expertise it will cut the energy cost for all ranger skills in half allowing them to do much more
and as for damage some skills allow them to do decent damage but mostly DOT damage (bleeding/posion).

they don't get the best armor....warriors do.
expertise is the best attribute in the game
and yes using the proper skills can allow a ranger to do a massive amount of damage..
but all of that goes into playing the ranger properly...it's not inherent.
played properly the ranger can be a very very big asset to any team/party

Expertise is the best attribute in the game if you use skills.

Ok this thread is pointless, the rangers have been discussed to death. Only people who have no real grasp of the game think rangers suck, they dont.

Ditto. Ranger was my first character and my only character through all of beta. I call her my big guns, and regularly get requests for me to help out other people with her.
I did my homework to make her effective in PVP, and even beat one of the ascension quests with a group of 4 rangers!
I love my ranger.

Ranger was my first character as well, but I didn't really like it as I didn't like energy draining/blackout/trapping (I was a R/Me).

Really depends what kind of Ranger we talking.
I think the ones with interupting/condition builds are the most lethal..
especially vs Mesmers.
Rangers with lots of interrupts.. are what bug me the most!

That statement is worth quite a bit actually. This game is actually cool in that you constantly have to adjust your thinking. What worked against Charr won't necessarily work against Hydras or Mursaat. Refund points are awesome.
I think that by the time people hit Old Ascalon, 90% of them know exactly what to do. As the game progresses, however, it seems like they try and hold on to what was working then and lose sight of what can work now.

Charr are easy.. really easy.. later on.. it just gets harder.. form let's say the Crystal Desert that's what often ticks people off, because they are like..
huh.. I am REALLY STRONG WHY DOESNT THIS WORK! they juz don't see... that they need to try a different approach.

Like everyone in this thread, it seems, ranger was my first character. I really enjoy playing him, and am working on completely beating every aspect of pve ith him. (every mission, bonus, quest, slite skill, etc) I also arena and tombs with him frequently. To be honest, I have so many setups I could bring in terms of skills and strategy, I can fill bascially any role my guildmates need, and I can do it very well.
The reason why most rangers suck, in my opinion, is that in ascalon they find the glorious ignite arrows+dual shot and aree like "OMG hax!" but they never get past that to realize that their little +6 splash damage isnt helping in kryta. Rangers cannot compete with oter classes for damage without some of their late game skills, but noobs dont realize that immedeately.
Earlier someone was comparing tactics used against the charr, hydras, merssaat etc. Against the charr the high damage aprraoch works. Against hydras, rangers are best off bringing distracting and savage shot to keep their team alive by denying meteors. By the time you face the mersaat, you have barrage and tigers fury etc, so you can go back to damage, or start trapping, interupting, etc.
